Hey he’s speaking kind of quickly. Does anyone else think he had a little too much coffee before making this video? ;-D lol

I mean nothing in disregard, love your videos but coffee can actually aggravate ulcers, etc. I know this from personal experience. That’s why I tend to prefer tea but regardless, I agree with the majority. Oh and Mormons do drink caffeine…just not coffee and black tea since there is a particular type of acid in it they are against. I have seen many drink pepsi or coke and drink hot chocolate all of which have caffeine.

@Insubordinate90 Rather than the plant ‘sensing’ the presence of an attacker, the attacker typically provides part of the chemical reaction to take place. The reaction therefore won’t take place needlessly or, as in your example, due to creatures which pose no threat.
What purpose would a plant evolving pain serve? It serves to encourage avoidance – a behaviour which a plant can’t display!

@Insubordinate90 I did not say that everything that has a defense system is non-sentient.

You presented the plants’ self defense as evidence of its sentience. I’m pointing out that self defense is not, by itself, evidence of ability to feel pain.

Yes, plants react to stimuli. That is a fact. But lots of things — like military grade robots — react to stimuli. That does not mean they feel pain. There is no evidence that anything without a nervous system has the capability to feel pain

@CGPGrey You’re just running in circles now. Yes I know how a white blood cell “chases” bacteria, I’m majoring in biochemistry. So everything and anything that has a developed defence system is non-sentient? What about when you put your hand into a flame? Does that require no sentience at all because you automatically react to the surrounding environment? I hope you take this for a rhetorical question. Anyway, you completely ignored my point that plants react to stimuli, which is a fact.

@SilveryMiracle The development of the pheromone is beside the question. What does it matter what it secretes? The fact still stands that the plant “sensed” in one way or another its natural predators’ actions, and developed a means to counter that. Now I don’t know about you, but that is a pretty sentient action from something that “doesn’t feel anything” as suggested by the video.

@Insubordinate90 Google for ‘youtube white blood cell chases bacteria’. There are a ton of complex activities that require no sentience at all yet still react to the surrounding environment.
