The recipe for the world famous (or at least amongst former CPS students) cafeteria butter cookies. I’ve been making these for the past couple of years since I found the recipe and they are just as good as I remember. The most important part is the butter – make sure to let it soften naturally. If you soften it in the microwave, it will make the cookie harder than it should be. **NOTE: The video shows 4 sticks of butter because I was making a double batch. Stick to the amounts listed in the video and you’ll be set. I found the recipe here (useful if you want a printed version): www.recipegoldmine.com Good luck baking!

Horaayy..there are 25 comment(s) for me so far ;)

Wow… You just made my day with this. I was just bugging co-workers and family members for this recipe but not one person had it. I miss these cookies.. Haven’t had them in a good while.

1 person used salt & spread instead, cuz they couldn’t borrow a cup of sugar or a stick of butter from any1.

Thanks so much. I tried so many other recipes before and this recipe finally did it. I came to Chicago public schools, from Rhode Island and San Diego, California schools first and these were the best lunchroom cookies anywhere in the country. Shout out to Morgan Park High. I did not say it was the best food of anywhere in the country, just the best cookies. (Loved Rhode Island’s lunchroom shepards pie and clam chowder)

These are the best cookies ever! My daily lunch Senior year in 1975, Carl Schurz High School, consisted of a bottle of Diet Rite cola, a bag of David’s shelled sunflower seeds and one of these cookies. On Friday every once in a while they would make them chocolate! My mom gave me the recipe (huge) for Lane Tech’s peanut butter cookies (BOE) from the 60′s!

Thank you soooo much for sharing this recipe! I went to Chicago Vocational and I remember that they, also, had made these with a chocolate swirl going thru them. Does anyone know how I could do that without changing the nice crumbly texture of this cookie? I’m not that kitchen savvy! lol Thanks in advance!! =0)

I HAD THESE EVERY DAY AT LUNCH FROM 1963 TO 1967 AT CARL SCHURZ HIGH SCHOOL IN CHICAGO, AND THEY ARE STILL MY FAVORITE. I USED TO BUY EXTRA AND SLIDE THEM IN MY NOTEBOOK AND PINCH OFF PIECES DURING CLASS!!

Thank you! LOOOOOOVED these cookies. In fact, it was pretty much the only thing I ever ate at Cooper (Lil & Big) School in Pilsen and then later at Whitney Young back in the day. Totally delish with chocolate milk. YUMMMMY!

Thanks for the recipe and bringing back the memories that accompanied this wonderful treat. Not many things can beat this 10 cent tasty jewel.

Also, LOOOVE the ever-present standard Chicago painted radiator in the background. I miss Chicago! Can’t wait to return! :0)
