post Category: Hot Coffee Recipes post Comments (42) postOctober 5, 2011

Once a week, I use an Ayurvedic cleansing tea to shampoo my hair while wearing yarn twists. In this video, I share another cleansing tea recipe and show how you can make it *without* a coffee pot! Recipe: 5 cups water* 2 tablespoons reetha (aritha) powder (to cleanse) 1 tablespoon shikakai powder (to cleanse) 1 tablespoon amla powder (to condition) 1 tablespoon hibiscus powder (to condition) ¼ cup aloe vera gel (to moisturize) 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (to remove excess oil) 10 drops tea tree essential oil (to clean hair follicles of residue) *On June 26, 2011, I tried making the the tea with less water (used about 2-3 cups) and it was a disaster! The yarn in my hair absorbed most of the liquid and I had very little tea remaining to wash my hair. So, if you are using the tea to clean hair while wearing yarn, more is better. Less liquid would work if you are just washing hair (minus yarn). You can ask as many questions as you want!! :-) No, the gel doesn’t thicken the mixture. The AVG dissolves. I am not sure how you would thicken the mixture. If you find a way, please share!

@NappyNFree Thanks for the quick response…one more question…sorry lol…do you find that the aloe vera gel thickens the mixture? I would probably use less water anyway but I’m trying to think of ways to thicken this (although it’s not 100% necessary for me). I saw a recipe involving Ayurvedic herbs and flaxseed (and a bunch of other oils/EOs).

YES! I like the other mix, but find I like this one a little more because of the aritha. Both got my hair clean (or what I thought was clean :-), but if I had to pick a tea, I would definitely pick this one.

Thanks for responding to my previous comment. I have a question though: Do you find this mix to be more cleansing than the other one? I ask because I think aritha is more cleansing than shikakai (I have both but haven’t used aritha yet).

Hi there! Thanks for watching and subbing. I think this tea will work fine if you don’t have a lot of product build-uo on your hair. I only use this when wearing yarn and it works great for me! Please let me know how it works for you!

@krystlehime
You are absolutely right about the pastes. I don’t use that much water.l I like it to have a pudding-like consistency.

@krystlehime
Hey again! Good question. It DOES seem like a lot of water, but when you factor in the amount of powders being used and how I am using it as a cleansing rinse while wearing yarn twists…it works (for me :-). Plus some of the water evaporates, so you don’t end up with 5 cups of water. But you could definitely use less water! It still would work just as good. I might, though, decrease the powders to a teaspoon.

Hi,

I use Indonesian palm sugar called Gula Jawa. The picture of is in this movie. It looks like a cylinder block, the outside wrapper is plastic, marked with GULA JAWA. I don’t use the pale kind and always buy the soft Indonesian Gula Jawa. It tastes better too.

Regarding the dessert you are talking about. It is familiar. Does it has banana in it? We call it Kolak. It is common to serve coconut milk, gula jawa, pandan, and a bit salt as the sauce in Indonesian desserts.

YUM! Couple of questions – the palm sugar you used looks SO MUCH easier to handle & A LOT darker than the ones I buy from the asian market – they are a bi@tch to chop & dissolve and almost always end in some bloodshed! What makes your kind different? I also like another southeast asian dessert that uses coconut milk, sugar, pandan, tapioca, bits of taro, and presumably agar. Do you know what it’s called and can you please make a video of it if you know how? Thnx

If you don’t like coffee, you can make the top layer only, the creamy part with coconut milk,Indonesian palm sugar, vanilla extract, and pandan. Apple juice will not be a good substitute. I actually like the creamy layer better. Pandan leaves can be found in Asian markets in metropolitan areas, in frozen section. Thai, Vietnamese, Burmese, and Malaysian also use pandan so usually these leaves are available in Chinese/Asian markets who supply Southeast Asian ingredients.

I’m not too keen on coffee, so this may sound weird but could I replace the coffee with apple juice?
And the pandan leaves, can they be found only in Indonesian shops, or would other Asian shops have them too (Thai, Chinese etc.)?

To gel 2 cups of liquid, you’ll need 1 tsp. agar powder or 2 Tbsp. agar flakes. So for 4 cups, the answer is 2 tsp. agar powder or 4 Tbsp. agar flakes. For agar flakes, you’ll need to soak the flakes in the liquid for 10-15 minutes before heating them up.
