For some reason, this cake has always been called "Velma Massey’s Coffee Cake" in our family, though I don’t think anyone can recall who Velma Massey might have been. Whoever she was, she had a dang fine recipe!

The only instruction I’ve left out in the steps that follow is one that’s specific to our family: my grandmother’s recipe specifically admonishes the baker to call my father "for taste-testing help." If you use this recipe, I’ll happily volunteer in his place.
