Nøgne Ø Imperial Stout Highland Edition

A bottle of Imperial Stout Highland Edition from Nøgne Ø in Grimstad, Norway.
This very limited edition 9% abv brew is a regular Nøgne Ø Imperial Stout that was aged for three months in Highland Scotch whiskey barrels. It pours a black color with a brown frothy head. Aroma is really pleasant, with chocolate and vanilla and some coffee. Mouthfeel is really smooth but feels a bit thin. The taste is really pleasant too but is less rich than what the aroma promised, somehow the rich malt and coffee flavor of the regular IS has been watered down by the aging process. I would have liked a little more body. Still, nice vanilla oak tones and some roasted bitterness in the finish.
I think Nøgne Ø could have improved this beer, just like Haandbryggeriet did with their Aqua Vita Porter, by beefing up the original Imperial Stout recipe before aging it on barrels.
