Ice Kacang – Penang Cofee House AUD6

Hankering for a Char Kway Teow, we head to Penang Coffee House. We also ordered the specials of the Hainanese Chicken Rice, and Chai Tow Kueh, stir-fried cubes of radish cake.

Until I revisited my Chai Tow Kueh from 2005, I had totally forgotten about this uh, forgetable version. And it was soggy. The 炒馃条 Char Kway Teow was quite smoky, maybe even a bit too smoky, and the Hainanese Chicken rice was just ok. Even the Ice Kacang wasn’t that great with very coarsely shaved ice, and not like fresh powder snow.

Given the average, or maybe slighty above-average, standard of food, and the above-average prices, it’s not surprising that the restaurant that used to be packed on a weekday night is now only three quarters full on a Thursday night.

I wonder if the famous curry laksa is still good? The blogosphere are strangely silent…
